What You Need Before You Start

Have the following ready before you begin the booking process:

  • Valid photo ID — your passport or biometric residence permit (BRP). If you only have an eVisa (no physical BRP card), use your passport. Driving licences are not accepted.
  • Your home address — you will need to enter a UK address
  • An email address — your confirmation and any updates will be sent here
  • A payment card — to pay the £50 fee

Your name must appear on the booking exactly as it appears on your photo ID. Any mismatch can prevent you from sitting the test.

Step-by-Step Booking Guide

Step 1 — Go to the official booking site

Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. This is the only official booking site. There are third-party sites that charge extra fees on top — avoid them and book directly. Standard slots cost £50. Evening, weekend, or short-notice slots cost more — see the full fee breakdown.

Step 2 — Create an account

You will need to create an account with your name, email address, and a password. If you have booked before, you can sign in to your existing account.

Step 3 — Enter your details and ID

Check our ID requirements guide before starting — you need a passport or BRP, not a driving licence.

You will be asked for:

  • Full name (as it appears on your ID)
  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Photo ID type and number (passport number or BRP number)
  • Nationality

Step 4 — Choose your test centre and date

Enter your postcode to find your nearest test centres. A list of available centres will appear with their addresses. Select a centre, then choose from the available dates and times.

Important: In busy cities — particularly London, Manchester, and Birmingham — available slots can be 3–4 weeks away. If your visa or ILR application has a deadline, factor this in and book well in advance.

On slot pricing: Slots between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, booked with more than 48 hours notice cost £50. Evening, early morning, and weekend slots cost £75. If you have flexibility, choose a standard weekday slot to pay the lower fee.

Important

Tests booked outside 10am–4pm, Monday to Friday or within 48–24 hours, incur an extra £25. Super Priority bookings (within 24 hours) cost an additional £30 on top of the standard test fee.

Step 5 — Pay and confirm

Pay the £50 fee by debit or credit card. Once payment is confirmed, you will receive a booking confirmation by email. Save this — you will need to bring it (printed or on your phone) on test day.

What to Bring on Test Day

  • Your booking confirmation (email printout or phone)
  • The same photo ID you used when booking — passport or BRP
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early

You cannot bring notes, phones, or any study materials into the exam room. Leave them in your bag or car.

Rescheduling and Cancellation

You can reschedule your appointment for free up to 3 days before your test. If you cancel more than 3 days before, you receive a full refund of the £50 fee. If you cancel within 3 days, the fee is not returned. If you simply do not attend, no refund is given.

To reschedule or cancel, log back into your account at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. See our full guide on how to reschedule or cancel the Life in the UK test for step-by-step instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book the Life in the UK test by phone?

No. Booking is done entirely online at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. There is no telephone booking option.

How far in advance can I book?

You can book up to 6 months in advance. There is no minimum notice period, but test centre availability varies — in busy areas, the nearest available slot may be several weeks away.

Can I choose any test centre in the UK?

Yes. You can book at any approved test centre in the UK, not just the one nearest to you. If your local centre has no availability, you can select one further away.

What if I need to change my test centre?

Log in to your account at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test and reschedule. As long as you do this more than 3 days before your appointment, there is no charge.

Do children need to book separately?

The test is not required for anyone under 18. Only adults applying for ILR or citizenship need to take it.

Can I book before I am ready to take the test?

You can book as soon as you like, but the £50 fee is lost if you cancel within 3 days or fail to attend. Only book when you are confident in your preparation — or when you have enough time before your appointment to study properly. Read our guide on how to pass first time before booking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Booking through a third-party site Some websites charge additional fees on top of the official fee to process your booking. The only legitimate booking site is gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test — standard slots cost £50, out-of-hours slots £75. Third-party sites add their own charges without providing any benefit. Your booking is not more secure or reliable by going through them — it is simply more expensive.

Using a driving licence as ID Driving licences are not accepted as photo ID for the Life in the UK test. You must use a passport or biometric residence permit (BRP). If you arrive at the test centre with only a driving licence, you will not be allowed to sit the test and will lose your £50 fee. Check our full ID requirements guide before booking to ensure you have the right document available.

Name mismatches between your booking and your ID Your booking name must match your ID exactly — including middle names if they appear on your passport or BRP. Even minor differences (a missing middle name, a hyphen) can cause problems at check-in. If you are uncertain, enter your name exactly as it appears on your ID document when creating your GOV.UK account, before you book.

Not booking early enough before a visa deadline In large cities, test slots fill up several weeks in advance. If you have an ILR or citizenship application deadline, do not leave the booking until the last few weeks — you may not find an available slot in time. Check availability at the GOV.UK booking site before you need to book, so you know how much lead time your local test centre requires.
