Quick Overview

✅ The standard route requires 5 years residence plus 12 months with ILR immediately before applying
✅ The spouse route requires 3 years residence plus ILR or Settled Status (no 12-month ILR wait)
⚠️ You must have ILR or Settled Status — you cannot apply for citizenship while on a temporary visa
⚠️ Good character is assessed — a serious criminal record or immigration violations can prevent approval
📌 The 12-month ILR requirement applies immediately before the application date, not at any point
📌 Your Life in the UK test pass is valid for life — you do not need to retake it
💡 Pass the Life in the UK test before your ILR application — one less thing to arrange later
💡 The ceremony fee of £130 is included in the total £1,839 — you do not pay it separately

Requirement 1 — Residency

For the standard naturalisation route, you need 5 years of lawful residence in the UK. You also need to have held ILR or Settled Status for at least 12 months immediately before the date you apply.

The 5 years does not need to be on any specific visa — it accumulates across qualifying periods of leave. But the 12-month ILR period is strict: it must be the 12 months immediately before you apply.

For the spouse or civil partner route, the residence requirement is 3 years, not 5. You must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen at the time of the application. The 12-month ILR wait does not apply on this route.

Absence limits: You cannot have been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the 5-year period. In the 12 months immediately before your application, you cannot have been outside the UK for more than 90 days.

Use our ILR eligibility calculator to confirm your qualifying date before starting the citizenship countdown. Our citizenship planner then shows you your exact citizenship eligibility date and a full cost breakdown based on your route.

Requirement 2 — Good Character

The good character requirement is assessed by the Home Office. It covers:

Criminal history: A serious criminal conviction can prevent approval. Custodial sentences of 4 years or more are generally a permanent bar. Shorter sentences have a fixed waiting period before you can apply. Minor offences may not be a barrier — but disclose everything and let the caseworker assess.

Immigration compliance: Overstaying a visa, working without permission, or previous deception in an immigration application can all affect the good character assessment.

Financial conduct: Significant unpaid tax debts or financial dishonesty are relevant to good character.

Civic obligations: This includes things like jury duty if called. Wilful avoidance can be raised as a character issue.

If you have anything in your background that you are unsure about, get advice from an OISC-regulated immigration adviser before applying. You can also use our free good character checker to assess your situation before applying.

Requirement 3 — English Language (B1)

You need to demonstrate B1 level English. Not sure if you are at that level yet? Try our free B1 level check — 15 questions covering vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension. The same accepted tests that apply for ILR also apply for citizenship:

  • Trinity GESE Grade 5
  • Trinity ISE I
  • IELTS Life Skills B1

If you already have a B1 certificate from your ILR application, you can use the same certificate for your citizenship application. You do not need to retake the test.

The same nationality and degree exemptions that apply to ILR also apply to citizenship. Note that if you were exempt from the English language requirement when granted settlement, you must submit an exemption form again when applying for citizenship — the exemption is not carried over automatically.

Requirement 4 — Life in the UK Test

You must have passed the Life in the UK test. The pass mark is 18 out of 24 — 75%.

Your test result is valid for life. If you passed the test for your ILR application, you use the same pass notification letter for your citizenship application. You do not need to retake it.

Include the pass notification letter with your Form AN application.

Requirement 5 — Intention to Remain in the UK

You must state your intention to remain in the UK as your main home. Or you must intend to enter or continue in Crown service, service of a British Overseas Territories institution, or service of an international organisation of which the UK is a member.

This is a declared intention, not a contractual commitment. It reflects that citizenship is for people who consider the UK their permanent home.

The Application Process — Form AN

You apply using Form AN. This is completed online through GOV.UK. The process involves:

  1. Complete Form AN online
  2. Upload all supporting documents
  3. Pay the fee (£1,709 + £130 ceremony = £1,839 total)
  4. Attend a biometric appointment if required
  5. Receive a decision from the Home Office
  6. Attend a citizenship ceremony if approved

The ceremony is where you take the Oath of Allegiance and receive your certificate of naturalisation. It must be attended within a set period of receiving your decision.

Costs for British Citizenship in 2026

Adult naturalisation: £1,709 application fee + £130 citizenship ceremony = £1,839 total from 8 April 2026.

The ceremony fee is included in the total — you do not pay it as a separate charge at a different time. You pay the full £1,839 when you submit the application.

Child citizenship registration: £1,000 per child from 8 April 2026. Children are not naturalised — they are registered as British citizens.

Passport: A British passport is not included in the citizenship fee. An adult British passport costs £102 for a standard 34-page passport (online application). A child passport costs £66.50. These are separate costs after you receive citizenship.

For more detail on costs, see the how much does British citizenship cost guide.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Naturalisation applications are usually processed within 6 months. If it will take longer, you will be told before 6 months have passed.

Processing times can vary. Submit your application as early as you are eligible — do not wait until you need the citizenship urgently (for example, for a job requiring British citizenship). Allow significant lead time.

Exemptions

Certain people are exempt from some requirements:

Age: Applicants under 18 follow different rules (they are registered, not naturalised). Over-65s may be exempt from the English language requirement.

Disability: Physical or mental conditions that prevent meeting the English or Life in the UK test requirements may lead to exemption. A completed exemption form from a doctor and original medical reports are required. Check GOV.UK for the full criteria.

Crown service: Some people in Crown service abroad can apply even if they have not met the standard residence requirements.

Check GOV.UK for the full list of exemptions applicable to your situation.

Common Mistakes

Applying for citizenship before holding ILR for 12 months The standard route requires ILR for at least 12 months immediately before the application date. Many people see they have ILR and assume they can apply immediately. They cannot — unless they are on the spouse route.

Not declaring a previous conviction The good character requirement asks you to disclose criminal history. Failing to disclose — even something minor — and then having it discovered by the Home Office is treated as dishonesty. Always disclose and explain.

Using a B1 test result that is not on the approved list Only Trinity GESE Grade 5, Trinity ISE I, and IELTS Life Skills B1 are accepted. A general IELTS test, a GCSE, or another qualification will not satisfy the requirement.

Counting absences from the wrong starting point The 450-day absence limit covers 5 years before the application date. The 90-day limit covers the 12 months before application. Calculate carefully from your intended application date — not from when you arrived in the UK.

Assuming citizenship costs the same as ILR They are separate fees. ILR costs £3,226 per person. Citizenship naturalisation costs £1,839 per adult. Many people apply for citizenship without realising it is a further significant cost on top of ILR.

Expert Tips

  1. Create a timeline working back from when you want to apply. Calculate your 5-year residence date, then add 12 months for ILR, then add processing time. That gives you a realistic citizenship target date.

  2. Pass the Life in the UK test before your ILR application. You can then use the same pass notification letter for citizenship later. One test, two uses — and you only have to think about it once.

  3. Calculate absences carefully before applying. Use a spreadsheet to log every trip outside the UK with dates. Missing a day can take you over the limit. Accuracy matters.

  4. Request a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before applying. This lets you see what the Home Office will see. If anything appears that you did not know about, you can address it before submitting.

  5. Book your citizenship ceremony promptly after approval. Once you receive your approval, there is a deadline to attend the ceremony. Missing it creates complications. Book the ceremony appointment as soon as approval arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to live in the UK to get British citizenship?

The standard route requires 5 years of lawful residence, plus 12 months with ILR immediately before applying. The spouse route requires 3 years if you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen.

Do I need ILR before applying for citizenship?

Yes. You must hold ILR (or Settled Status) before applying for naturalisation. You cannot apply for citizenship while on a temporary visa such as a Skilled Worker visa.

Can I apply for citizenship if I have a criminal conviction?

It depends on the nature and length of the sentence. Serious convictions can permanently bar you. Lesser convictions have a waiting period. Disclose everything on your application. If you are unsure, get advice from an OISC-regulated adviser before applying.

Is the Life in the UK test the same for citizenship as for ILR?

Yes. It is the same test. If you passed it for your ILR application, the same pass notification letter is used for citizenship. You do not retake the test.

How much does British citizenship cost in 2026?

The fee is £1,709 for the application plus £130 for the citizenship ceremony — a total of £1,839 per adult from 8 April 2026. Child citizenship registration is £1,000 per child.

How long does the citizenship application take?

Applications are usually processed within 6 months. If it will take longer, you will be told before 6 months have passed.

Does my partner need to apply separately?

Yes. Each person applies individually. Your partner cannot be included in your application. If you both want British citizenship, you each pay the full £1,839 fee and submit separate Form AN applications.
