The Life in the UK Test Is Not an English Test

This is the most common misunderstanding. The Life in the UK test tests your knowledge of British history, culture and society. It is not a measure of your English language ability.

You need both:

  1. A pass certificate from the Life in the UK test
  2. A B1 English language qualification from an approved provider

These are two completely separate requirements. You submit both when you apply for ILR.

Which English Tests Are Accepted for ILR

The Home Office only accepts specific tests from approved providers. As of April 2026, the accepted tests for ILR are:

Trinity College London

  • GESE Grade 5 (B1 level, speaking and listening)
  • ISE I (Integrated Skills in English, B1 level)

British Council / IDP

  • IELTS Life Skills B1 (speaking and listening)

These tests focus on speaking and listening — not reading or writing. You do not need to demonstrate written English for ILR.

Do not take a general IELTS test expecting it to qualify. The standard IELTS Academic or General Training tests are not accepted for ILR language purposes. You need specifically IELTS Life Skills B1.

Who Is Exempt From the B1 English Test

You may not need a B1 test if you fall into an exempt category. The most common exemptions are:

Nationality exemption If you are a national of a majority English-speaking country, you do not need a B1 test. The confirmed GOV.UK list includes: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British overseas territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA. Ireland is exempt for citizenship applications only.

Degree taught in English If you have a degree, Bachelor's, Master's or PhD, that was taught and assessed in English, you may be exempt. The degree must be from a recognised institution. Check GOV.UK for the exact evidence requirements, including what documentation you need to provide.

Age exemption Applicants aged 65 or over are exempt from the English language requirement.

Disability or health exemption If a long-term physical or mental condition means you cannot meet the English requirement, you may qualify for an exemption. You will need to submit a completed exemption form from a doctor along with original medical reports.

If you think you may be exempt, check the GOV.UK ILR guidance directly and find your specific category. Do not assume — an incorrect exemption claim can cause your application to be refused.

What B1 Level English Actually Means

B1 is the third level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It means you can:

  • Understand the main points of clear speech on familiar topics
  • Handle most situations in an English-speaking environment
  • Describe experiences and explain opinions on familiar subjects

It is not advanced English. It is the level you need to navigate everyday life — conversations with employers, doctors, councils, and neighbours. If you have been living and working in the UK for 5 years, most people already have B1 level English in practice.

How the B1 Test Works

B1 speaking and listening tests are conducted in person at a test centre. The test is a spoken assessment — usually 10-15 minutes — with an examiner. You are not sitting a written paper.

The test involves tasks like describing a picture, answering questions, and having a short conversation. The examiner assesses whether you can communicate at B1 level.

Results are typically given within a few days. You receive a certificate that you include with your ILR application.

How Much Does the B1 Test Cost?

B1 English tests cost between £150 and £215 depending on the provider and test centre location. Fees vary between Trinity College London, IELTS Life Skills, and LANGUAGECERT. Check the provider's website when booking for the exact fee at your chosen centre.

Can You Take the B1 Test Online?

It depends on the provider. LANGUAGECERT offers a secure proctored online exam that can be taken from home. Trinity College London and IELTS Life Skills are in-person only at test centres. All must be booked through approved UKVI providers.

Applying for ILR With Your B1 Result

When you apply for ILR, you submit your B1 test certificate as evidence of your English language ability. You also submit your Life in the UK test pass notification letter.

These are separate documents. Both must be included. Missing either one will make your application incomplete.

Keep copies of all certificates. The originals may be requested by the Home Office.

Common Mistakes

Assuming the Life in the UK test counts as the English requirement It does not. These are two separate requirements. Passing the Life in the UK test does not exempt you from the B1 English requirement. You need both documents for a complete ILR application.

Taking the wrong type of IELTS test IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are not accepted for ILR. You need specifically IELTS Life Skills B1. If you take the wrong test, it will not count and you will need to retake.

Assuming any English qualification qualifies Only the three approved tests count. A GCSE in English, a work-based English qualification, or a general language test from a different provider will not be accepted. Check GOV.UK for the current approved list.

Leaving the English test to the last minute Test centre availability can be limited. Some locations have waiting times of several weeks. Book your B1 test as early as possible — ideally at the same time you begin studying for the Life in the UK test.

Not checking whether you are exempt before booking If you are a national of a majority English-speaking country or have a degree taught in English, you may not need a B1 test at all. Check your exemption status on GOV.UK before spending money on a test you do not need.

Expert Tips

  1. Check your exemption status first. Before booking any test, spend 10 minutes on GOV.UK confirming whether you are exempt. If you are exempt, make sure you have the evidence (such as a degree certificate) to support that claim in your application.

  2. Book your B1 test early. Availability varies by location. In some cities, the next available slot is 4-6 weeks away. Book as soon as you know you will need the test — do not wait until you have passed the Life in the UK test.

  3. B1 is lower than you think. Most people who have lived and worked in the UK for several years are already well above B1 level. The test is not designed to be a barrier for people who use English daily. It is straightforward if you communicate in English regularly.

  4. Use the same name on all documents. Your name on your B1 certificate must match your name on your passport and ILR application exactly. Any discrepancy can cause delays. Check before you book.

  5. Keep all certificates indefinitely. Once you have ILR, you may later apply for British citizenship. The same B1 certificate you used for ILR is typically accepted for citizenship. Keep it permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take an English test for ILR if I have lived in the UK for 5 years?

Living in the UK for 5 years does not automatically exempt you from the English language requirement. Most applicants still need a B1 test unless they fall into an exempt category (nationality, degree taught in English, age, or disability).

Can I use my GCSE English results instead of a B1 test?

No. GCSEs are not on the approved list. Only Trinity GESE Grade 5, Trinity ISE I, or IELTS Life Skills B1 are accepted for ILR applications.

My degree was taught in English — do I still need a B1 test?

You may be exempt. If your degree was taught and assessed in English, check GOV.UK for the exact evidence requirements. You will need to provide the degree certificate and may need a letter confirming the language of instruction.

How long is the B1 test result valid for?

B1 certificates are generally valid for 2 years from the date of the test. However, if you are applying for settlement (ILR), you can use an expired certificate if it is on the current approved list and was previously accepted for another UK immigration application. For citizenship, you can use an expired certificate if it was accepted when you were granted settlement in the UK.

Can I take the B1 test in my own language?

No. The B1 speaking and listening test is conducted entirely in English. That is the point — the examiner is assessing your ability to communicate in English.

What if I fail the B1 test?

You can retake it. There is no limit on retakes. Each attempt costs the test fee. If you are struggling, look at the preparation resources offered by Trinity or IELTS Life Skills and identify where you are losing marks.

How This Aligns With Official Guidance

The B1 English language requirement for ILR is set out in the Home Office Immigration Rules. The approved tests are listed on GOV.UK and updated when providers change. Always check GOV.UK for the current list of approved tests before booking, as providers and accepted qualifications can change.
