Why People Search for "IELTS Life Skills B2"
Many applicants took IELTS Life Skills B1 for their earlier UK visa. When they hear about the B2 rule change, they search for the same product at B2. It sounds logical. But the product does not exist.
Life Skills is a specific IELTS variant designed for speaking and listening only. It was built to test the CEFR levels needed for spouse visas (A1), extensions (A2) and settlement under the current B1 rule.
There is no B2 version because B2 requires reading and writing too. Life Skills does not include either.
What Level Is IELTS Life Skills?
IELTS Life Skills is offered at two levels:
IELTS Life Skills A1
- For some family visas
- Tests speaking and listening
- Short test, around 16–18 minutes
IELTS Life Skills B1
- For current ILR/settlement (until 26 March 2027)
- Tests speaking and listening
- Short test, around 22 minutes
That is the full list. No A2 version, no B2 version, no C1 version.
What You Actually Need for B2
For UK immigration at B2 you have four options:
1. IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training
- Tests all four skills
- Needs 5.5 in each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)
- Book through UKVI SELT booking system only
2. Trinity ISE II
- Integrated Skills in English at B2
- Face-to-face at UK centres
3. LanguageCert Academic/General/International ESOL B2
- SELT format
- See LanguageCert B2 practice
4. Pearson PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home at B2

The 5.5 in All Four Rule — Do Not Get Caught Out
This is where most applicants trip up.
For B2 with IELTS for UKVI you need 5.5 or higher in each of:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
An overall band of 5.5 is not enough if one component is below 5.5. Even 6.0 overall fails if, say, your Writing is 5.0.
Plan your prep so no single skill drags you down. Writing is the most common weak point for people moving up from B1.
IELTS Life Skills B1 vs IELTS for UKVI at B2
| Feature | Life Skills B1 | IELTS for UKVI (B2) |
|---|---|---|
| Test length | ~22 minutes | ~2 hours 45 minutes |
| Skills tested | Speaking, Listening | Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing |
| Scoring | Pass / Fail | Band scores 0–9 per skill |
| Writing paper? | No | Yes |
| Reading paper? | No | Yes |
| B2 minimum | N/A | 5.5 in every skill |
| Prep time (typical) | 4–8 weeks | 8–16 weeks |
If you passed Life Skills B1 with ease, do not assume IELTS for UKVI will feel similar. The step up is substantial. Full breakdown: B2 vs B1 English test UK.
What Happens If You Book the Wrong Test?
The Home Office rejects wrong evidence. GOV.UK states:
"Your citizenship or settlement application will be refused if you send the wrong qualifications."
Common wrong bookings:
- ❌ Standard IELTS (non-UKVI version) — will not count
- ❌ Life Skills booking hoping it counts for B2 — will not count
- ❌ IELTS Academic taken at a non-SELT centre — will not count
- ❌ Expired IELTS (over 2 years old) — will not count
Always book "IELTS for UKVI" through the UKVI-approved booking system.
When Do You Need B2?
- Now until 26 March 2027: B1 is still the standard
- From 26 March 2027: B2 is the new minimum for most settlement routes
This is confirmed by Statement of Changes HC 1691, published 6 March 2026. Full policy explainer: B2 English requirement 2027.
