A B2 English test is a Home Office-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) at CEFR level B2. From 26 March 2027, most people applying for ILR or settlement will need to pass one. B2 is one full step above B1. It tests all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

What Is the B2 English Test?
B2 is a level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At B2 you can:
- Understand the main ideas of complex text
- Interact with fluent speakers without strain
- Write clear, detailed text on a range of subjects
- Explain a viewpoint with reasons and examples
For UK immigration, you must take a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Only SELTs from approved providers count. General exam certificates like a normal IELTS Academic booking do not qualify unless they are the UKVI version.
The Home Office is very clear on this. GOV.UK states: "Your citizenship or settlement application will be refused if you send the wrong qualifications."
Who Needs a B2 English Test?
From 26 March 2027, B2 becomes the new minimum for most settlement routes. This is confirmed law under Statement of Changes HC 1691. Routes affected include:
- Family route (spouse, partner, parent)
- Skilled Worker
- High Potential Individual
- Scale-up

You may be exempt if you:
- Are a national of a majority English-speaking country
- Hold a degree taught in English (check GOV.UK evidence rules)
- Are aged 65 or over, or have a qualifying disability

The Four Approved B2 SELT Providers
Only tests from these four providers count for UK immigration at B2:
1. Trinity College London
- Tests: ISE (Integrated Skills in English), GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English)
- Format: In-person at UK centres
- ISE II is the B2-level integrated skills test
2. IELTS SELT Consortium
- Test: IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training)
- Format: In-person at UKVI-approved centres
- B2 pass = 5.5 or higher in all four components
- Note: IELTS Life Skills only goes up to B1 — see IELTS Life Skills B2
3. LanguageCert
- Tests: Academic, General, International ESOL SELT
- Format: In-person and some online options

4. Pearson
- Tests: PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Home
- Format: Computer-based at approved centres
Always book through the provider's SELT booking system. Do not book a standard, non-UKVI version by mistake.
B2 vs B1 — How Much Harder Is It?
B2 is a real jump from B1. The main differences:

How Much Does a B2 Test Cost?
Fees vary by provider and test centre. B2 tests cost more than B1 tests because they cover all four skills and take longer.
The one confirmed starting price: LanguageCert B2 SELT starts from £200. For Trinity ISE II, IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI, check each provider's UKVI booking page directly for current UK prices — fees change and vary by location.
Expect to pay more than you paid for B1. Allow for this in your ILR budget alongside the £2,885 application fee.
How to Choose the Right B2 Test
Pick based on three things:
1. Format that suits you
- Prefer face-to-face? Choose Trinity or IELTS UKVI.
- Prefer computer-based? Choose Pearson PTE.
- Prefer flexible dates? LanguageCert often has more slots.
2. Location and availability
- Check which centres are near you before booking.
- Some UK centres get booked out 4–6 weeks ahead.
3. Your English strengths
- Strong at writing? IELTS or Trinity ISE II may suit.
- Prefer shorter sittings? PTE tests are faster.
If you already have any IELTS score above 5.5 from a UKVI-approved centre, check whether it is still in its 2-year validity window before rebooking.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Booking a standard IELTS instead of IELTS for UKVI — standard tests do not count
- ❌ Searching for "IELTS Life Skills B2" — the product does not exist (full explanation)
- ❌ Assuming your B1 certificate rolls over — it does not, from 26 March 2027
- ❌ Taking a test at a non-SELT centre — the certificate is not accepted
- ❌ Leaving it too late — some centres are fully booked 6 weeks out
- ❌ Losing the certificate — reprints can take weeks and cost extra

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the B2 rule definitely law? Yes. It was confirmed in Statement of Changes HC 1691, published on 6 March 2026. It takes effect on 26 March 2027.
Can I still apply with B1 in 2026? Yes. Until 26 March 2027, B1 is still the minimum. Apply before that date if you already hold B1.

How long is a B2 certificate valid? Two years from the test date. Book so your certificate is still valid when you apply.
